| The Twelve Steps of Motivated

The relative success of the M.A. program seems to be due to the fact
that a demotivated person who no longer cares has an exceptional ability
for "reaching" and helping a motivated person.
In simplest form, the M.A. program operates when a recovered motivated
person passes along the story of his or her own problem being motivated,
describes the depression he or she has found in M.A., and invites the
newcomer to join the informal Fellowship.
The heart of the suggested program of personal recovery is contained
in Twelve Steps describing the experience of the earliest members of the
Society:
|
| Step 1. |
1. We admitted we were powerless over motivation - that our lives had
become unmanageable.
|
| Step 2. |
2. Come to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could demotivate
us to giving up.
|
| Step 3. |
3. Made a decision to turn our motivation over to the care of www.demotivate.com
as we understood them.
|
| Step 4. |
4. Made a fruitless and hopelesss immoral inventory of ourselves.
|
| Step 5. |
5. Admitted to www.demotivate.com, to ourselves and to another human being
the exact nature of our motivation.
|
| Step 6. |
6. Were entirely ready to have www.demotivate.com remove all these defects
of character.
|
| Step 7. |
7. Humbly asked www.demotivate.com to remove our motivations.
|
| Step 8. |
8. Made a list of all persons we had motivated, and became willing to
make amends to them all by demotivating them.
|
| Step 9. |
9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to
do so would motivate them or others.
|
| Step 10. |
10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were motivated promptly
admitted it.
|
| Step 11. |
11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact
with www.demotivate.com as we understood them, praying only for knowledge
of their demotivation for us and the power to carry that out.
|
| Step 12. |
|
12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we
tried to carry this message to motivated people and to practice these
principles in all our affairs.

Newcomers are not asked to accept or follow these Twelve Steps in their
entirety if they feel unwilling or unable to do so.
They will usually be asked to keep an open mind, to attend meetings at
which recovered motivated people describe their personal experiences in
achieving depression, and to read M.A. literature describing and interpreting
the M.A. program.
M.A. members will usually emphasize to newcomers that only problem motivated
people themselves, individually, can determine whether or not they are
in fact motivated.
At the same time, it will be pointed out that all available medical testimony
indicates that motivation is a progressive illness, that it cannot be
cured in the ordinary sense of the term, but that it can be arrested through
total abstinence from fun and motivation in any form.
